Recommended during the rainy season: Nihonmatsu-ji Temple and the Itako Hydrangea Festival

2026/05/25
  • Notice from the hotel

A breathtaking spectacle of vibrant colors created by 10,000 hydrangea plants of 100 different varieties, lovingly cultivated by the head priest and his wife.

Nihonmatsu-ji Temple has a history dating back to the beginning of the Heian period, specifically the Tenchō era (824 AD).

Within the temple grounds, there are many historical sites steeped in history, including a commemorative tree said to have been planted by Tokugawa Mitsukuni himself, and the "Futamoto Pine" in which he composed a poem.
"Ajisai no Mori" (Hydrangea Grove) was initially started when the head priest's wife began planting hydrangeas as a memorial for a family member.

The couple diligently cultivated the plants for many years, and in August 2014, they achieved their goal of 10,000 plants.

With a wide variety of types, the landscape created by the colorful hydrangeas resembles a patchwork quilt.

It has become known as the "Hydrangea Temple" due to its beautiful scenery, and you can enjoy different varieties of hydrangeas every year.

The temple grounds also feature walking trails that allow visitors to enjoy nature, and you can walk through the hydrangea grove to the main hall and offer your prayers.

Additionally, the "flower water basin," where hydrangeas are floated in the water basin, is a popular spot for taking photos.
