Endless grasslands once existed all over Japan, but after the period of rapid economic growth, they now account for only 1% of the country's land area. This makes the grasslands feel even more beautiful and deeply moving. Aso Grassland is one such grassland.
Spreading around a huge caldera, rare plants grow and cows and horses relax there. Although Aso sounds like one mountain, it is actually the collective name for the five mountains of Aso: Mt. Nekodake, Mt. Takadake, Mt. Nakadake, Mt. Eboshidake, and Mt. Kijimadake. It is said that the current Mt. Aso was formed by a large-scale eruption 270,000 years ago.
Additionally, Aso Caldera on Mt. Nakadake is a depression created by the eruption, and is one of the largest in the world, stretching 18km east to west and 25km north to south. In the center of Aso Caldera is Mt. Nakadake, which is still active today, and you can view the crater up close. Recharge your batteries at the Five Peaks Aso, which was also the subject of mountain worship.
