Kashima Shrine

Kashima Shrine is dedicated to Takemikazuchi no Okami, the god of war and the founding ofJapan.

This is a historic shrine founded in the first year of the reign of Emperor Jimmu(660 BC), and its deity is this one.

It is in a class of its own when it comes to its long history and pedigree, and is the head shrine of approximately 600 Kashima Shrines across Japan.

The bright vermilion tower gate was donated by Tokugawa Yorifusa, the first lord of the Mito domain.
It is one of the three great gates of Japan, alongside Aso Shrine Kumamoto and Hakozaki Shrine Fukuoka.
This is a valuable gate that has been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
Beyond that are the main hall and worship hall (both Important Cultural Properties), which are enshrined solemnly.

Mitarai Pond has more than 400,000 liters of spring water per day and is so clear that you can see the entire bottom of the pond.

It is said that in the past, people would perform a purification ritual here before worshiping, and nowadays, as many as 200 people perform the Daikanmisogi ritual here at the beginning of the year.

The forest within the temple grounds, designated as a prefectural natural monument, is approximately the size of 15 Tokyo Domes.
Many precious plants grow here.
It's also a great spot for forest bathing, where you can stroll through the dappled sunlight filtering through the trees.
