Ichinoseki is attractive for its rich natural environment, including the Genbikei Gorge.
There are plenty of tourist spots where you can experience history and culture.
IchinosekiGenbikei (Genbikei)
On both banks of the Iwai River, which originates from Mt. Kurikoma, there is a valley lined with strangely shaped rocks that stretches for approximately 2km. Genbikei, where you can enjoy the beauty of each season with its rock surfaces polished by the passage of time and emerald green water streams, has been designated as a national scenic beauty and natural monument. At the pavilion, you can enjoy Genbikei's specialty, ``Kakko Dango,'' brought in baskets from the opposite bank.

IchinosekiGeibikei boat ride
Enjoy a luxurious waterside time exploring the Geibi Gorge in a flatboat rowed by a boatman. Places of interest such as Sobu Rock and Umaryo Rock unfold one after another, and the innermost part has a mysterious atmosphere. In winter, a kotatsu boat is available, and you can also enjoy wood-nagashi nabe (reservation required). Also, the boatman's song "Geibi Oiwake" will liven up your travel spirit. It takes 1 hour and 30 minutes round trip. Since it is a houseboat from November 21st to March 31st, pets are not allowed on board.

Hiraizumi-choChusonji Temple
A temple located in Hiraizumi Town in the southwestern part of Iwate. It is said that at the end of the 11th century, Kiyohira, the first head of the Oshu Fujiwara clan, moved his mansion to Hiraizumi and built Chuson-ji Temple to mourn the spirits of all those who lost their lives in battle. The area around Chuson-ji Temple was registered as a World Heritage Site in June 2011 as a ``Hiraizumi Cultural Heritage Site,'' and the Pure Land philosophy that Kiyohira envisioned is still alive today.

Hiraizumi-choTakkoku no Iwaya Bishamondo
A rock cave where Sakanoue Tamuramaro enshrined Bishamonten in commemoration of his conquest. Bishamon-do Hall, built on a cliff, has been rebuilt every time there has been a fire.
At Takkoku Saikoji Temple, there is a talisman called ``Goohoin'' which is said to be the strongest and is said to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune if hung at the altar or entrance.
Don't miss the Hiraizumi period statue of Jorokufudo Myoo (a prefecturally designated cultural property) and the ``Gammen Daibutsu'' (Buddha on a carved cliff).

Hiraizumi-choMotsuji Temple
Motsuji Temple was founded by Jikaku Daishi Ennin, and many temples were built during the era of the Fujiwara clan's second and third generation, Motohira and Hidehira.
At that time, it had 40 halls and pagodas and 500 monks' quarters, and is said to be larger and more splendid than Chuson-ji Temple. After the fall of the Oshu Fujiwara clan, all the buildings were burnt down due to repeated disasters, but today, the Jodo garden centered on ``Oizumigaike'' and the remains of a temple from the Heian period have been preserved in almost perfect condition, and are one of the best in the country. It has been designated as a special historic site and a special place of scenic beauty.

IchinosekiMt. Kurikoma (Sukawadake)
A mountain with an altitude of 1,626 meters that spans the three prefectures of Iwate, Akita, and Miyagi. On the Iwate Prefecture side, it is called Sukawadake, and Hot springs rise in the Sugawa Highlands that spread out in the middle.
Every year in May, when the mountain is opened, many climbers come to see the fresh greenery of beech trees from spring to early summer, alpine plants in summer, and beautiful autumn leaves that are called "God's carpet" in autumn.
