The red and yellow scenery of trees is called "Koukouha-you," but when referring to the leaves, we say "momiji" or "kaede" (maple). In fact, both are generic names for broad-leaved trees in the family Mucuroideae and genus Acer, and are the same plant in botanical classification. In Japan, the Japanese name "kaede" generally refers to large leaves with shallow lobes, while the Japanese name "momiji" refers to smaller leaves with deep lobes. Then, do you know when Japanese people started to enjoy autumn leaves? In the Manyoshu, there are over a hundred waka poems about autumn leaves, in which the poets lament the changing colors and their falling. Japanese culture since ancient times has been heavily influenced by China, and it seems that many people view autumn and autumn leaves as a time of loneliness and sadness. On the other hand, however, there is also an expression, "the brocade of autumn leaves," which is said to be a uniquely Japanese expression that uses brocade as a metaphor for autumn leaves. It is said that the love for the beauty of autumn leaves has not changed over thousands of years, and is something common to all. Incidentally, the term "Momiji-hari" (autumn-leaf viewing) is said to have originated in the Heian period (794-1185). At that time, aristocrats considered walking to be vulgar, so they traveled exclusively by ox cart. However, it was difficult to enjoy the autumn leaves on a mountain path by ox cart, so they called it "Momiji-hari," meaning "autumn-leaf viewing" because they considered it as hunting when they went out to the mountains and fields on foot.
