#1 The Taste of Japan History We pass through Nachikatsuura on the way to Kumano, a place where gods and humans live and where they can rejuvenate their souls. At first glance, the Kumano Kodo looks like an ordinary mountain path. Why does it attract so many people? In fact, Kumano is a land full of charm, so much so that it is said to be "worth the trip." The Kumano Kodo is a pilgrimage route that connects the sacred sites of the Kumano Sanzan (the collective name for Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha, Kumano Nachi Taisha, and Nachisan Seiganto-ji). This area originated from nature worship, where gods are worshipped as residing in rivers, waterfalls, and giant rocks, and has been considered a special place as a "land of rebirth." This is why the "Kumano faith" was born, where people entrust their happiness in the afterlife to the gods by visiting Kumano. In the first place, tourism in Japan began as a "pilgrimage" trip, and the Kumano pilgrimage is said to be its origin. In the Heian period, the Kumano pilgrimage was for people of high social status, but in the Heian and Kamakura periods, word spread throughout Japan that the Kumano Sanzan Shrines welcomed everyone equally, and many people, regardless of social status, made their way to Kumano over the difficult path. In 2004, the cultural landscape that people and nature have nurtured over the years was considered to be unparalleled, and the "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range" was registered as a World Heritage Site. In addition, the area received three stars in the Michelin Green Guide, and in recent years, tourists from all over the world have begun to visit. Autumn is the best season for trekking along the Kumano Kodo. At Nachi Falls, one of Japan's three most famous waterfalls and boasting the highest drop in Japan at 133 meters, the famous waterfall and autumn leaves make a magnificent combination. Also, if you walk along the approach surrounded by the Nachi primeval forest, you will be overwhelmed by the abundant, untouched flora. In winter, you can enjoy snowy scenery at various places along the Kumano Kodo. If you are looking to welcome the new year, we recommend Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine. It is said that if you visit the main hall between 2am and 4am on New Year's Day when the doors are open, your wishes will come true. Follow the thoughts of the ancients along the Kumano Kodo, one of the most unexplored areas in the Kansai region. See the seasonal flora and the impressive waterfalls. See the scenery of Japan, learn about Japan, and enjoy Japan. A journey to savor knowledge and flavors. The more you learn, the deeper and more fascinating Nachi Katsuura becomes. Meet the miraculous gods along the Kumano Kodo, and learn about tuna fishing methods that will continue into the future at the fishing grounds of Katsuura. A little detour: The large torii gate from the observation deck. Daimonzaka, which recalls the ancient pilgrimages to Kumano. Nachi Falls, one of Japan's three most famous waterfalls, splashes spray through the trees. The best time to see the autumn leaves is from mid-November to early December.
